If the infection enters the pulp (inside) of the tooth, it can compromise its health. In this case, you may need root canal therapy in Provo, Utah. Dr. Porter may take X-rays and perform other examinations if they feel a root canal may be necessary. At Pfeifferhorn Dental, we are eager for you to contact our dentists for an appointment or to address your concerns and questions. You can reach us at 801-615-2917. We look forward to your call! Root canals are a type of endodontic treatment recommended when the dental pulp and tooth nerves are injured or infected. This type of injury or infection occurs when the tooth sustains damage or tooth decay reaches beyond the outer layer of protective enamel and deep into the inner areas of the tooth. If left untreated, the tooth can die and may need to be extracted from your mouth.

Root canal treatment prevents the need for extraction and tooth replacement by removing the infected and injured tissues, allowing you to retain your original tooth. When you receive a root canal, our dentist will open the tooth to remove the infected and injured tissues. We will then clean the tooth and fill it with medicated material to prevent reinfection. The tooth will then be capped with a dental crown to restore its original shape and structure and protect it from further damage. Most root canal treatments can be completed in just one or two visits.

Root canal therapy is generally a very successful treatment and in most cases will completely resolve the problem of your infected tooth. In some cases, however, your tooth may become re-infected. This may occur if your tooth did not heal as expected or if your tooth has complicated root anatomy. When this occurs, our dentist may recommend a root canal retreatment to restore your oral health. The process for retreatment is the same as your original root canal.

While root canal procedures have reputations for being painful, the reality is that your treatment can be completed with minimal discomfort. Advances in dentistry techniques, tools and sedation options have made it possible for you to receive a root canal treatment without pain or discomfort.
